This article explains how to drag and drop production orders and runs to position them on the correct machine, in the best queue sequence, or at the desired start time in the Planning board (SCHEDULING section). Drag and drop means clicking and holding an order or run with the left mouse button, moving it to a new location (the drag), and releasing the mouse button to place it (the drop).
Orders can be dragged from an orders list (see Automatic vs manual planning) onto the planning board and from one run to another, provided the destination run has the same configuration. Runs can be dragged to other machines.
Visual indicators
While dragging, several visual indicators help you understand what will happen: the mouse pointer changes to indicate whether the action is permitted, a vertical line shows the intended start time and position within the run, and an order or run bar follows the pointer as you move it.
Mouse pointer
The mouse pointer changes to reflect whether the action is allowed.
![]() | Drop allowed | Depending on the drop location, the order or run will be placed at the end of the queue, before, or after an existing order or run. |
![]() | Drop allowed with specific start time | The order or run will start at the time indicated by the dashed line. (SHIFT is pressed during the drop. |
![]() | Drop not permitted | Possible reasons include incompatible configurations, machine mismatch, dropping in the past. If you drop, the order or run will return to its initial location. |
Vertical line
A vertical dashed line extending to the timeline shows the intended start time. If the SHIFT key is pressed during the drop, the order will be placed exactly at the time indicated by the dashed line. Note that you can also change the start time of a run by clicking the run and setting Earliest start date and/or Earliest start time.
Following order or run bar
When you drag a run, an order bar with header follows the pointer.
When you drag an order, the following can happen:
- When you hold the order above a free space, an order bar with a header named 'NEW RUN' appears to indicate that a new run will be created.
After dropping, 'NEW RUN' changes into the name of the configuration. - When you hold an order above another order with the same configuration, only the order box is shown. The order will form a run with the other order or will be added to the existing run. A line with an arrow indicates the exact position and time within the run where the order will be placed.
Drag and drop behavior
You can define the exact position of an order in the queue by dropping it at a specific location.
Adding orders to the queue
When you drag an order into the free space after a queue, the order is added to the queue immediately after the last scheduled order. It will not leave a gap; the new order is positioned as close as possible to the preceding order.

Forcing orders into position
Orders can be placed at a specific position in the queue, forcing subsequent orders to shift to a later time.
To do this, drag the new order onto the order that should be pushed back.

Filling the gaps
If you drop an order onto an order with Earliest start date set, and there is enough free space before that order, the new order will automatically be placed in that space, before the existing order.
